7 Things To Keep In Your Pantry + 16 Easy & Creative Things To Do With Them


One of the big ways you can eat well & still save on your grocery bill is to keep a well stocked pantry.  What does a 'well stocked' pantry include? Here are 7 suggestions & 16 easy (and creative) things you can do with them:
  • Sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil
    • Spear with a cube of mozzarella & fresh basil for hors d'oeuvres.
    • Puree with a little canned chicken broth & use as a sauce for chicken or vegetables.
  • Canned White Beans
    • Mix with minced garlic, olive oil & chopped sage & use as a topping for bruschetta.
    • Puree with grated lemon peel, olive oil & rosemary & use as a dip.
    • Toss with canned tuna, chopped red onion, olives & vinaigrette for a simple & interesting salad.
  • Wasabi Paste or Powder
    • Stir small amounts into hot mashed potatoes.
    • Mix with store brought chicken salad & add water chestnuts.
  • Polenta
    • Layer soft-cooked polenta with sauteed onions & Fontina cheese, then bake.
    • Cook in garlicky broth, then mix with Parmesan cheese & a little chopped fresh basil & drizzle with olive oil.
  • Jarred or Canned Salsa
    • Puree with olive oil and use as a marinade for fish & vegetables.
    • Mix with mayonnaise & cilantro & toss with pieces of cooked chicken for chicken salad.
  • Couscous
    • Mix with currants, garbansa beans & curry powder, then sprinkle with chopped mint.
    • Add leftover cooked meat or chicken & vegetables to couscous; add chopped sun-dried tomatoes & some garlic.
  • Hoisin Sauce
    • Use warmed up as a glaze for tuna fillets & steaks.
    • Combine with red wine & braise shorts ribs in the mixture.
    • Mix with reduced pineapple juice to make a marinade for chicken.
