Frugal DIY: Pottery Barn Inspired Chalkboard Platters

I ran across this super easy DIY tutorial over on The Rubber Punkin & I can't wait to try it!!  I'm no craft queen but this is something I can definitely do!

I.love.Pottery.Barn. But, I don't love the idea of paying high prices for my design choices. So when I saw this Pottery Barn Inspired Chalkboard Platter tutorial, I was one happy girl!

Pottery Barn Chalkboard Platter= $99.00

Emily over at The Rubber Punkin shows how with a little chalkboard paint, a white platter she found at the thrift store (for only $8) & a little painter's tape, she created her own Pottery Barn chalkboard platter for a FRACTION of the cost!

The Materials:

Step 1:

First, tape around the area you want to be covered with chalkboard.
Then, cover the white ceramic border with newspaper. Tape it in place.
This is going to keep the white parts white, so don't skip this step.
Step 2:

Spray paint where you want the chalkboard to be.
Emily suggests letting it dry for 24 hours before you remove the tape.

The Finished Product:

How cute is this??

Your total cost may vary a little, depending on how much your platter costs & whether or not you already have chalkboard spray paint & painter's tape.  But no matter what, this is definitely a frugal craft!

$99 for the Pottery Barn version or less than $10 for this do it yourself knock off version? I'll save $89 anyday!

Happy Crafting!

Thanks to The Rubber Punkin for this awesome tutorial!

  1. I tried this, but the chalk board paint scratched off. I tested it at one coat. I wiped it down with alcohol first, and let it dy. Did you sand the plate first?
